Introducing you to barbers from around the world to share their hints, tips and stories with you. This week we’re fortunate to be able to chat to Charlene “Charley” Rhodes from the barbershop Just 4 Him Haircuts in Larose, Louisiana.
What first got me into the Barbering GAME was when I moved to Austin, Tx about 8 years ago and I got a job at an amazing barbershop similar to Just 4 Him. But it was Co-Ed, Birds Barbershop on East 6th st. I’ve been pursuing that barber passion since but collectively I’ve been doing hair for 14 years.
What was your biggest mistake/learning curve when training?
Ignoring facial shapes and trying to give everyone the same cut, I realize now 7 years later that was a HUGE DEAL and very important to the work and customer service we do here at Just 4 Him.
With new barbershops popping up all over, what do you think makes a successful barbershop business?
Having a successful business comes in 3 big parts 1. Education 2. Customer service 3. Pleasant and loyal employees/ independent contractors. Just 4 Him wouldn’t be successful without the knowledge we are instilled with by our owners, educators and positive attitudes and lifestyles.
What are you finding is the most popular style/trend recently?
Natural beards, enhancements are great until it’s time to wash it. I try to use natural beard oils and washes to help my clients grow full beautiful beards.
The barbershop is the perfect place to relax and discuss all manner of topics. What’s the funniest story you’ve come across when chatting to clients?
Funniest thing is hearing all the insane things these men go through when it comes to Louisiana Baby Mamas, the lengths they go to smh, include: fighting being number one, running trucks into houses, stealing cars, releasing alligators into their yards and sending their nudes to their entire family.
Guys growing out beards have been popular over recent years; do you think this trend will continue/what’s your opinion on them and the styles?
Oh yes absolutely, females love beards and have since the dawn of time, my most favourite is a simple length to accentuate the clients face, with a sharp line.
Men’s grooming is only getting more popular, what new products or techniques would you like to see improved within the industry?
More Beard products to promote healthy beards, lather machines that don’t cost over 100 dollars and more cordless clippers that work amazing and don’t die fast.
What one bit of advice, if you could back in time would you give yourself when you were just starting out in barbering?
USE A BARBER COMB
What’s your favourite tool to use in your shop?
I’m obsessed with the new patent pending 100th anniversary Wahl cordless clippers! You can also use them with the cord and they cut like butter and do not get clogged easy. My other favourite for my guys with beards is a special Nola branded beard oil I have made special for me by my good friend, Idyll Hands NOLA, it has all organic ingredients and even promotes healthy beard growth without any after feel or smell. Absorbed easily and smells amazing.
